Construction

The top is a two-piece construction of fine, straight, even-growing alpine spruce. It shows an iron mark in the center of the arch inside reading " S. SOULTANIAN". SOULTANIAN". The central joint is further reinforced by five spruce cleats carved into laterally tapering rectangles.

The back, too, is a two-piece construction, with beautiful medium-wave maple pieces in a continuous herringbone pattern. Inside, we find the " S. SOULTANIAN " mark. SOULTANIAN " towards the center of the arch. Also on the central joint are five laterally tapering, rectangle-cut spruce reinforcement cleats. In place of the label is a fac simile of Carlo Bergonzi reading " Anno 1736 Carlo Bergonzi - Fece in Cremona". Finally, we find two round pegs on either side of the central joint under the knob and between the chinrest feet.

The inside of the body reveals beautiful spruce blocks and ribs. The internal finish is old-fashioned, revealing a rather dark, golden wood.

The ribs, also in maple, join flat at the back. They are rather straight, with no visible herringbone. The corners are assembled in the Cremonese style, and the edge is very constant all around the ribs. Finally, there's no particular slope to note.

Scroll and handle

The scroll is perfectly executed in the master's style, with its prominent eyes and rather low second turn. With a little attention, we can see a third mark in the pegbox, just below the nut.

The fingerboard and saddles are made of fine-pored ebony.

The varnish

The varnish is made to Stepan's own recipe, the pleasant smell of which I've known for so many years. Set against a golden wood base, it is highly transparent and quite supple, allowing the instrument to vibrate perfectly. The wood also comes to life under the light, thanks to this one. Made from an antique copy, this instrument has a patina with abrasion and simulated surface wear. On the back, false joint openings also appear at the knob and on the shoulder side.

Getting to know the manufacturer better

Stepan Soultanian is an English violin-maker of Cypriot origin, who, after playing the violin in his youth, decided to train as a violin-maker at the Newark-On-Trent school. He took his diploma in the mid-1980s, and passed a jury in the presence of Yehudi Menuhin.

He then worked in Europe and Japan before settling in Cyprus, where he currently works in his studio. It's a quiet place, conducive to the concentration required by his work as an artist.

However, he travels frequently to present his instruments, which are very popular in countries such as :

  • The United Kingdom
  • Belgium
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Japan
  • Korea
