Where to find a violin teacher in Strasbourg

Two main solutions: schools and freelancers

Music schools

Choosing a music school means above all joining a structure offering a complete training program. Indeed, in addition to your violin lessons, you'll be able to take part in group activities(orchestras, choirs, etc.) and follow musical training courses(compulsory only for children; it's very rare for adults to be obliged to do so). They will then allow you to take exams that attest to your musical level. They also organize auditions and concerts throughout the year, providing excellent opportunities to perform in public.

Find a violin to start your lessons.

Above all, enrolling in a music school means committing to a fixed timetable for the school year, and to regular personal work. But it's also a good way to broaden your musical horizons, by taking part in workshops offered by certain schools, improvisation courses or initiation to other styles of music. Not to mention the fact that being part of a school means more encounters, especially with other students, and an excellent opportunity to share your passion with them.

As for school fees, they generally vary according to family income and home address. In general, it's cheaper if you live in the commune where you take the course. As a rough guide, I've provided an estimate of these costs in the list below.

Last but not least, it's important to know that teachers in schools can change regularly. Similarly, schools may decide to open a class depending on demand and student numbers. So don't hesitate to contact the school directly for information, even if they don't officially have a violin class.

Private tutors

Private tutors are often professional musicians or students in training(at the Rhine University of the Arts, for example). The content of lessons, the method used and the style of music covered vary from one teacher to another. It's important to find out from your teacher whether what he or she teaches is right for you.

Choosing a private tutor is a different, sometimes trickier approach, but it also has its advantages. You can decide for yourself how many lessons you want, and how regularly. You'll have greater flexibility when it comes to scheduling lessons, and in some cases, teachers are even willing to come to you!

Students are sometimes more mobile or flexible when it comes to working hours. But this is not always the case. In any case, you always have to bear in mind that these musicians will have careers or other obligations on the side, and may have to reschedule courses to fit in with their concerts and tours.

As for rates, they are usually set by the hour. This means you're in complete control of your budget, and the average price is usually €25/hour.

How do you choose your teacher?

As you'll have gathered from the first part of this article, you'll need to make a few choices before settling on a teacher who's right for you.

First, what are your musical goals? For example, you may want to play music for relaxation, or you may want to learn music with professional goals in mind. It's important to know what you want to learn, so you can steer yourself in the right direction.

Then, once you've decided on your goals, how do you want to learn? For example, you could join a conservatory, a music school or opt for a private teacher. Each of these possibilities has its advantages and disadvantages... That's why it's important to find out all you can before deciding on the most suitable solution.

Beware, however, as some schools, notably conservatories such as Strasbourg's CRR, organize entrance examinations for all students. This means that even those who have never played an instrument in their lives will have to pass a short test, which is usually no more than a formality. However, it does give you a head start on the many assessments you'll have to take along the way.

Finally, it's time to take the plunge and listen to how you feel. Eventually, you may feel the need to change, to try new methods, to seek new affinities or to tackle other styles. After all, it's all part of the learning process!

  1. Hello,
My son is 12 and would like to play the electric violin. Do you have the name of a teacher who accepts electric violins? His current teacher doesn't want him to practice with an electric...

  2. Hello,

My name is Mathias, I'm 16 and I've been playing the violin for 8 years. So far I've taken private lessons and played for two years with the OJS (juniors). I'm looking to discover other repertoires than classical: gypsy jazz, Irish, klezmer. Can you recommend any teachers?

    Thank you for your reply,

    Best regards,

    Mathias

    1. Hello Mathias,

The list of fiddle teachers in Strasbourg includes Darragh Quinn, who specializes in Irish music. For other styles, I may be able to put you in touch with teachers via the Internet.

  3. Hello,

Since I'm missing a piece of information, let me share it with you. The name of the violin teacher at the Ravel music school (Mundolsheim, Vendenheim, Lampertheim) is Jean-Marc Paulin.

I recommend him with my eyes closed (he was my teacher for 10 years when he taught in Erstein).

    Good day to you 🙂

  4. Hello,
My 16-year-old nephew would like to take up the violin.
Living in Sessenheim, it's very complicated.
Do you have a contact north of Strasbourg?
    Thank you very much!
